On Good Morning America recently, Geoffrey Owens told host Robin Roberts he hopes the conversation reminds people of the "honor of the working person" and the "dignity of work."

Owens first gained attention after a shopper spotted the actor working at the grocery store and told The Daily Mail about the discovery. Other outlets quickly picked up on the news.

Several of Owens' fellow actors came to his defense. Then on Tuesday, during an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," Owens opened up about his experience.

"I've been teaching, acting, directing, for 30 plus years but got to a point where it just didn't add up enough," he said, wearing his Trader Joe's name tag. "You gotta do what you gotta do. I wanted a job where I could have some flexibility to stay in the business."

Owens said he was initially "devastated" he gained so much attention over his job at Trader Joe's, which he's had for 15 months, and said the public reaction "hurt" initially, but the flood of positive responses quickly helped.
