Utah Governor Confirms Suspected Kirk Assassin Was Living With Transitioning Boyfriend

Olivia Pero : Sep 15, 2025  The Daily Signal

"This person made a choice, and this person will be held responsible. We also have to figure out how it came to be that a kid with a 4.0, with a 34 on the ACT, with a full ride scholarship at my alma mater, who didn't even last a semester, drops out and ends up doing something like this." -Governor Cox

"We're collecting much more, including forensic evidence that is coming back from Quantico, that will help us tie the shooter to the weapon and everything else," said Cox on ABC News' "This Week." "There will be much, much more information on Tuesday when that document is filed with the courts."

Prior to Friday's press conference, Cox said he and others had been up all night trying to obtain as much information as possible "in a very short amount of time."

According to Cox, the identified suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, was living with "a boyfriend who is transitioning from male to female."

While Robinson has not yet confessed to authorities, the boyfriend is cooperating, Cox said, adding that the initial information that Robinson was deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology came from his acquaintances and family members.

"This person made a choice, and this person will be held responsible," Cox said. "We also have to figure out how it came to be that a kid with a 4.0, with a 34 on the ACT, with a full ride scholarship at my alma mater, who didn't even last a semester, drops out and ends up doing something like this."

Cox told Americans Friday that Kirk's assassination "was a watershed moment that could be a turning point in history depending on the collective actions."

"Every one of us has to make a decision: Are we going to return violence with violence, or are we going to find a different path?" Cox said. "That's up to us, and that's the only way out of this. There is nothing else we can do to solve this dark chapter in our history."

President Donald Trump called Cox right after he spoke Friday, thanking him for the press conference and the words he expressed, as well as talking about Kirk.

"This may come as a bit of a surprise to some people, but President Trump was very grateful on multiple occasions during that very long conversation that we had," Cox said. "I was very grateful for the president's call."

Trump also warned Cox of the danger he faces in his position as governor.

"This is a very dark conversation, but he, of course, was … a fraction of an inch away from having this very thing happen to him, and that's what we talked about," Cox said. "These are very dangerous jobs these days and so it's not lost on us." Subscribe for free to Breaking Christian News here
