Unbelievable! Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum KICKS OUT Pro-Life Students...Since the employees claimed the museum was a "neutral space," it's worth pointing out that others in the museum wore hats and other apparel with messaging and logos of all kinds. They weren't told to remove them or leave. But because these kids were sporting a simple, innocuous pro-life message, they were deemed too offensive to enter a museum? It's absurd. And it's unconstitutional discrimination. End of discussion. Now we're taking legal action.
Now the ACLJ is fighting back. As we just reported that last [month], students from a Catholic school in Greenville, South Carolina, traveled to Washington, DC, to participate in the National March for Life. After the event, they visited the nearby Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Museum security and staff then accosted the students several times and demanded they remove their pro-life hats or be forced to leave. The group all wore the same blue hats with the message "Rosary PRO-LIFE." The school required the students to wear these hats so they could be located and kept together—basic safety protocols. They were just there at that time to enjoy the museum's exhibits. But that apparently didn't stop these abusive federal employees from hurling insults and profanities at these young people before throwing them out of a federal institution. Not only is this infuriating, without question, but it's also a direct violation of their constitutionally protected rights. And now the ACLJ is getting directly involved. We are representing the mother of two of the students who were chased out of the museum by these abusive federal employees. Our client posted on Twitter: My daughter just called from DC. [A] dozen kids from Greenville just got kicked out of the Air & Space Museum for wearing Pro Life hats. They were told to remove their hats or leave. Daughter told [the] man they had to wear [the hats] to find each other in [the] crowd. KICKED OUT for refusing to remove! A federal employee cannot tell anyone to take off a pro-life beanie. The same applies to any other pro-life message. The hats didn't even have images or anything that could be remotely problematic. They were blue beanies with black embroidery that read "Rosary PRO-LIFE." Where is the offense? Nowhere ... except in the minds of anti-life activists. And since the employees claimed the museum was a "neutral space," it's worth pointing out that others in the museum wore hats and other apparel with messaging and logos of all kinds. They weren't told to remove them or leave. But because these kids were sporting a simple, innocuous pro-life message, they were deemed too offensive to enter a museum? It's absurd. And it's unconstitutional discrimination. End of discussion. Now we're taking legal action. The ACLJ has entered this fight, and I assure you these employees will be held accountable for going after pro-life kids. And we will also seek to discover whether these were just outliers taking out their own twisted brand of bias-based justice or if it was indeed sanctioned or encouraged behavior in the federally funded Smithsonian. [January 27th's] full Sekulow broadcast includes more analysis of this blatant discrimination targeting defenseless young students and what we're doing to defend them. ACLJ Senior Counsel for Global Affairs Mike Pompeo also joined us to discuss his new book, Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love.
