High School 'Freedom Fighters' Stage Peaceful Walkout Protests of State Mask MandatesHigh school student Cade Costales, who has been praised across the country for his display of leadership, emphasized to his fellow students that their protests be respectful and peaceful.
Cade Costales, a senior at Washougal High School and leader of the "Freedom Fighters" protest group, has been widely praised for a viral speech to his fellow classmates in which he urges them to remain respectful while explaining the ultimate goal of the protests. "This is not an excuse for any of you freshmen and sophomores to disrespect your teachers. If I hear of anybody disrespecting teachers or staff tomorrow, that makes us look bad. We want this to be a peaceful movement. We are just trying to gain back our rights as citizens," Costales told his classmates at Fishback Stadium on Monday, January 31. "The teachers, in the end, are just doing their jobs. [The mandates don't] come from them. [They] come from the state." Costales continued, "What we're hoping is that they kick us out. This sounds bad, but we're hoping that they kick us out, because they have to report that attendance to the state, and if the state sees a day when 100—or I don't even know how many kids are here—are absent, they're going to start asking questions.
