Chicago Bus Drivers Quit over Vaccine Mandate, Disabled Students Turn to Uber, LyftAlmost 1,000 students with disabilities now rely on ride-sharing companies, after a vaccine mandate by Mayor Lori Lightfoot led dozens of bus drivers to resign.
The resignations have hurt already short-staffed bussing companies and have led to the city offering families $1,000 to take Uber, Lyft, or other ride-sharing services. Students with disabilities have been particularly hard-hit, with almost 1,000 of them left trying to find transportation to and from schools. Mayor Lightfoot's administration is also in talks with Uber and Lyft to provide regular transportation for students. Chicago Public School classes started on August 30, but 10 percent of bus drivers have now left their jobs, leaving the district scrambling. The schools have turned to ride-sharing companies, though those services do not require drivers to be vaccinated. "About 2,100 students, including 990 in special education, were given no more than two days' notice that their bus route no longer existed," the Chicago Sun-Times reported. "District officials said they received word Friday from the private companies with which they contract for bus services that 73 drivers had resigned because they refused to abide by CPS' vaccine mandate, which requires all employees and contractors to get shots by Oct. 15."
