Media outlets blamed the unrest on a failed COVID response, and even Trump. US Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was more direct in blaming the United States for the dire situation facing Cuban citizens, saying "We also must name the US contribution to Cuban suffering: our sixty-year-old embargo." But Marco Rubio, during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, took offense to that sentiment, placing the blame squarely on the communist regime.
