"It's been a great honor, the honor of a lifetime. The greatest people in the world, the greatest home in the world," Trump told reporters before heading to Marine One on the White House South Lawn. "We love the American people, and again, it has been something very special. And I just want to say goodbye but hopefully, it's not a long-term goodbye. We'll see each other again."

Trump then stopped for a brief departure ceremony at the airport at Joint Base Andrews before boarding Air Force One.

President Trump also spoke to the nation on Tuesday afternoon, issuing a farewell address on YouTube in which he began by wishing the incoming administration well.

"This week we inaugurate a new administration and pray for its success in keeping America safe and prosperous," President Trump said.

He mentioned prayer again a few minutes later in his address, highlighting the achievements of his own administration. "With the support and prayers of the American people, we achieved more than anyone thought possible. Nobody thought we could even come close," Trump said.

And the president also focused on faith again when he said "we are all made equal by God", later referring to our "God-given" freedom while speaking of America's history of greatness.

"For nearly 250 years, in the face of every challenge, Americans have always summoned our unmatched courage, confidence, and fierce independence. These are the miraculous traits that once led millions of everyday citizens to set out across a wild continent and carve out a new life in the great West.
