Cleveland Clinic Performs Their First-Ever Surgery on Unborn Baby: "Proof Positive" Pregnant Women are Carrying Human LivesPro-life advocates and organizations quickly applauded Cass and his colleagues for their impressive work .They pointed to the incredible surgery as proof positive women are, in fact, carrying human lives—not just clusters of cells—in their wombs.
The February procedure, according to a press release posted this week by the medical center, was to repair a spina bifida birth defect. The baby girl was successfully delivered by caesarean section on June 3rd. Both the mother and the infant are doing well. The medical team, led by Dr. Darrell Cass, director of Fetal Surgery in Cleveland Clinic's Fetal Center and a specialist who has performed more than 160 fetal surgeries since 2002, are the first to perform such a procedure in northern Ohio. Spina bifida, which impacts a person's ability to walk and run as well as his or her ability to go to the bathroom, is typically detected as early as 18 weeks into pregnancy, according to the clinic.
